More Discussions To Be Had On Violence

Seattle Medium

There are discussions and plans for more discussions around violence in communities around Seattle. King County and community leaders are looking to also discuss gun violence prevention methods. Anti-violence groups will talk to the King County Council about the impacts of gun violence and anti-violence community activism. Leaders of community groups said they will meet with the King County Council to discuss gun violence prevention.

Information coming from a few sources all are reporting upticks in violent crime. Data from the county shows in the first quarter of 2022, “shots-fired” incidents are up around 16% and the number of shooting victims is up around 4%. The eight people invited to speak this week have been impacted by gun violence. Many are now working in the community to end or significantly reduce the cycle of violence.

Activist leaders will speak before the council about how to care for communities impacted by gun violence. One group called RISE says it focuses on a holistic approach that intersects with public health in an effort to heal and restore families.

The meeting is the second of three meetings hosted by the council. County leaders said the council is looking for tangible ideas that can make a difference. Reducing gun violence they believe is a key part of the conversation to be about making changes.

Youth is a part of the conversation which can mean understanding and hope for the future. Young people are heavily impacted violence. Those that are have a higher chance of becoming violent too.
